2. Quick Summary /
English
This lecture demystifies Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), with a focus on Multivariate Cryptography as a crucial alternative to Lattice-based cryptography. Professor Wang traces the history of the PQC migration—sparked by the NSA's sudden 2015 announcement abandoning ECC due to quantum threats—and introduces the ongoing NIST "Additional" Digital Signature Competition. The lecture explains the core mathematical foundations of the Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar (UOV) scheme and its advanced, matrix-based successor, Snova. By using matrix variables and coefficients, Snova reduces the public key and signature size combined to less than 1KB, making it an exceptionally fast, highly secure, and "painless" drop-in replacement for legacy public-key algorithms like RSA and ECC. The talk concludes with Snova's real-world applications and its resilience against major algebraic and geometric cryptanalysis, including MinRank and WTAG attacks.

3. Structured Lecture Context (Extremely Detailed) /
3.1 Background of the Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) Migration / 後量子密碼學(PQC)遷移之歷史背景
English
- The Concept of PQC: Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) represents a portfolio of cryptographic algorithms designed to secure modern digital systems against attacks from quantum computers.
- The Watershed Moment (August 2015): The PQC movement was accelerated by a sudden, dramatic policy shift on the US National Security Agency (NSA) website in August 2015. The NSA removed pages encouraging the transition to Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and published a single page stating that all vendors providing hardware or software services to the US government must prepare for quantum computer attacks. This shattered the dominance of ECC overnight and shifted the cryptographic landscape.
- The Mathematical Paradigm Shift: For decades, public-key cryptography relied heavily on number theory (e.g., integer factorization for RSA, discrete logarithms for ECC). The NSA's announcement forced number theorists out of the core cryptographic spotlight, replacing them with mathematicians specialized in other domains such as lattices, error-correcting codes, and multivariate polynomial equations.
- NIST Standardization Competition: In 2016, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced a global competition at the PQC conference in Fukuoka, Japan, to solicit new post-quantum algorithms. The first round of standardization selected Lattice-based algorithms (ML-DSA, FN-DSA) and a Hash-based algorithm (SLH-DSA).
- The Multivariate Setback and Revival: Initially, a classic Multivariate signature scheme called Rainbow was selected in the NIST portfolio. However, Rainbow was critically broken shortly after selection. Because NIST adheres to the security principle of "not putting all eggs in one basket" (avoiding reliance on a single mathematical hard problem like lattices), the collapse of Rainbow prompted NIST to launch the "Additional Digital Signature Competition" in 2022 to find alternative non-lattice schemes. Snova entered this high-stakes contest.

3.2 The Critical Importance of Digital Signatures /
English
- The Cryptographic Triad: Modern cryptography is built on three pillars: Key Exchange (KEM), Encryption, and Digital Signatures.
- Identity as the Foundation: Among these three pillars, digital signatures are arguably the most critical and widely deployed. In online communications, parties cannot physically see one another. Identity verification is the absolute prerequisite for any secure interaction; without knowing who you are talking to, encryption and key exchange are meaningless. An attacker could simply impersonate the receiving party (Man-in-the-Middle).
- Guaranteeing Non-Repudiation: The core security property of a digital signature is non-repudiation. Just like a physical signature on a check or legal contract, once a digital signature is generated using a private key, the owner of that private key cannot deny having signed the message.
- The Mathematics of Public-Key Infrastructure (PKI):
- Private Key (Sk): Kept strictly secret by the owner, used to generate a unique mathematical signature $\sigma$ for a given message $M$.
- Public Key (Pk): Shared openly, allowing anyone to verify that $\sigma$ was indeed generated by the corresponding $Sk$ for message $M$ (typically verifying that $Pk(\sigma) = M$ or via a designated verification relation).
- Why Quantum Computers Break Classic PKI: Classic public-key algorithms (RSA and ECC) rely on the hardness of prime factorization and discrete logarithms. In the 1990s, Peter Shor proposed Shor's Algorithm, a quantum algorithm that solves both of these mathematical problems in polynomial time (reducing them from NP-hard to P-class complexity). Shor's algorithm is mathematically more efficient at breaking discrete logarithms than prime factorization, meaning ECC is actually more vulnerable to quantum computers than RSA. Given that nearly all modern cryptocurrencies and digital wallets rely on ECC to protect their assets, the realization of a quantum computer poses an immediate, existential threat to the global financial infrastructure.

English
- Mathematical Setup: Let $f_1(x_1, \dots, x_n), f_2(x_1, \dots, x_n), \dots, f_m(x_1, \dots, x_n)$ be a system of $m$ quadratic multivariate polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Each polynomial contains quadratic terms (such as $x_i x_j$ or $x_i^2$), linear terms, and constant terms.
- The Forward Mapping (Evaluation): Given an input vector $\mathbf{x} = (x_1, \dots, x_n)$, evaluating the system $F(\mathbf{x}) = (f_1(\mathbf{x}), \dots, f_m(\mathbf{x}))$ to obtain an output vector $\mathbf{y} = (y_1, \dots, y_m)$ is computationally trivial. It requires simple polynomial evaluation.
- The Inverse Mapping (Equation Solving): Given an output vector $\mathbf{y}$, finding an input vector $\mathbf{x}$ such that $F(\mathbf{x}) = \mathbf{y}$ requires solving a system of non-linear multivariate quadratic equations.
- Complexity of Equation Solving:
- Univariate High-Degree: Solvable via standard root-finding techniques (taught in high school/college mathematics).
- Multivariate Linear (Degree = 1): Solvable efficiently in polynomial time via Gaussian Elimination.
- Multivariate Quadratic (MQ) (Degree = 2, Dimension $n > 1$): When both the degree and the number of variables are greater than one, the problem of solving these simultaneous equations becomes NP-hard. This Multivariate Quadratic (MQ) problem is the secure foundation of multivariate cryptography.

3.4 Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar (UOV) Signature Scheme / 非平衡油醋(UOV)簽章演算法
Diagram: The Trapdoor Construction /
The public map is the composition; the private key is the three factors kept apart. UOV is the special case that omits S entirely, so P = F ∘ T. Recovering S, F, T from P is the hard problem.
English
- Core Design Philosophy: Traditional multivariate systems construct the public key $P$ as a composition of three maps: $P = T \circ F \circ S$.
- $S$ and $T$ are invertible linear mappings used to mix and entangle the variables, effectively hiding any structural features.
- $F$ is the central map (or core map), which possesses a trapdoor—a hidden mathematical structure that allows the legitimate private key holder to easily solve the inverse problem.
- The UOV Simplification: The Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar (UOV) scheme, proposed in 1999 (boasting nearly 30 years of security scrutiny), simplifies this construction by omitting $S$, requiring only $T$ and $F$ ($P = F \circ T$).
- Variable Classification:
- Let there be $n$ variables in total, partitioned into two disjoint groups:
- Vinegar Variables ($v$ variables): ${x_1, \dots, x_v}$
- Oil Variables ($o$ variables): ${x_{v+1}, \dots, x_{v+o}}$
- The total dimension is $n = v + o$. The scheme is "Unbalanced" because we typically set $v > o$ (often $v \approx 2o$ or more) to prevent structural attacks.
- Let there be $n$ variables in total, partitioned into two disjoint groups:
- The central map $F$ Structure:
- Every quadratic polynomial $f_k$ in the central map $F$ is constructed with a strict structural constraint: $$\text{Allowed terms: } (\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Vinegar}) \quad \text{and} \quad (\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Oil})$$ $$\text{Forbidden terms: } (\text{Oil} \times \text{Oil})$$
- The name "Oil and Vinegar" is a metaphor for two liquids that do not mix, remaining in separate, well-defined layers.
- How Signature Generation Works (Inverting the Trapdoor):
- To sign a message hash $\mathbf{y} = (y_1, \dots, y_o)$, the signer first assigns completely random values to the $v$ Vinegar variables.
- Once the Vinegar variables are fixed as constants, the term $(\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Oil})$ collapses into a linear term in the Oil variables, and $(\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Vinegar})$ collapses into a constant.
- Because there are no $(\text{Oil} \times \text{Oil})$ terms to generate quadratic Oil interactions, the central map $F$ is transformed into a system of linear equations in $o$ variables.
- The signer solves this system of $o$ linear equations for the $o$ Oil variables using standard Gaussian Elimination.
- The complete central signature vector is assembled. The signer then applies the inverse linear transformation $T^{-1}$ to yield the final signature $\sigma$.
- Security Asymmetry: To an outside observer, the public key $P$ appears to be a general, randomized set of MQ equations with no recognizable structure, rendering any algebraic solver attempt NP-hard.
- UOV Trade-offs:
- Advantages: Extremely simple algebraic structure, rapid verification speed (equivalent to evaluating multivariate polynomials), and highly compact signatures.
- Disadvantages: Massive public keys. Because the public key must store the full set of coefficients for $o$ quadratic polynomials in $n$ variables, even a Level 1 security implementation requires a public key of approximately 40KB, which exceeds the packet constraints of many network communication protocols.
Diagram: Signing versus Verifying /
Signing walks the composition backwards one factor at a time, which only the trapdoor makes cheap. Verifying is a single forward polynomial evaluation — which is why UOV-family verification is so fast.
3.5 Snova: The Matrix-based UOV Variant / Snova:基於矩陣結構的 UOV 進階變體
English
- The Evolution of Snova: To overcome the key size bottleneck of classical UOV, researchers developed variants to compress the public key. Snova represents the peak of this lineage, combining multiple compression techniques into a cohesive matrix-based architecture.
- Matrix Variables and Coefficients: Instead of using scalar variables and scalar coefficients over a finite field, Snova reformulates UOV by substituting them with matrix variables and matrix coefficients (e.g., $l \times l$ matrices).
- Massive Public Key Compression:
- When utilizing a matrix algebra framework, the coefficients are expressed as compact matrix representations.
- From a matrix perspective, the absolute number of required coefficients stored in the public key is drastically reduced.
- Consequently, Snova successfully compresses the combined size of the public key and the digital signature to less than 1KB (under 1K).
- Painless Drop-in Replacement: With a key-and-signature package size under 1KB, Snova is comparable to RSA key sizes. This allows it to function as a "painless" drop-in replacement in legacy software and existing network protocols (e.g., TLS, SSH) without requiring heavy protocol refactoring or packet fragmentation handling. Snova achieves the best-in-class specification profile among all non-lattice digital signatures in the NIST Additional Competition.

The same matrix structure that compresses the key is what gives cryptanalysts something extra to grip. That trade-off is the whole story of the next section.
3.6 Attacks, Defensive Hardening, and Security Margins /
Diagram: Where Each Known Cryptanalytic Result Lands /
Read this as a live scoreboard, not a settled result. The rank and geometric branches were answered by parameter changes, but the 2026 wedge-product result against 6 of 11 parameter sets and the weak-key forgery are open items — SNOVA's parameter selection is under active scrutiny going into Round 3.
English
- The "Indestructible Cockroach" of Cryptography: Over its four-year history in the NIST competition, Snova has been subjected to intense cryptographic scrutiny from top research teams worldwide (spanning Japan, China, Europe, and the US). Because of its complex matrix structure, Snova has attracted more security analysis than other candidates, earning it the humorous moniker of an "indestructible cockroach" due to its ability to withstand every successive wave of cryptanalysis.
- 1. The MinRank (MR) Attack:
- Mechanism: In the first round of the competition, a prominent cryptanalyst proposed a MinRank attack targeting Snova. The attacker identified that Snova’s initial parameter design selected coefficients with a high degree of mathematical consistency (homogeneity), which allowed an algebraic solver to reduce the rank of the public key matrices much faster than expected.
- Mitigation: Snova's design team corrected this in Round 2. They modified the parameter generation algorithm to avoid selecting consistent coefficients, breaking the homogeneity. This modification rendered the MinRank attack completely ineffective.
- 2. The WTAG / WTAT Attack:
- Mechanism: A Dutch doctoral researcher (L. de Feo / L. de Feire? No, the transcript notes: "WTAG, WTAT 的作者 L, 他是一個荷蘭荷蘭的博士... 拿取了密碼學的獎項") introduced the "WTAG" (or WTAT) geometric attack. Unlike traditional algebraic attacks, WTAG uses a differential geometric approach to exploit algebraic structures in UOV-family systems. The author claimed WTAG could compromise UOV, Rainbow, and Snova.
- Snova's Response: While Snova was initially targeted, the attack code contained a calculation error regarding the estimation of certain algebraic group sizes. The attacker subsequently retracted the Snova attack. Snova's team investigated further and found that while a mathematically corrected version of WTAG could pose a threat, the attack is highly sensitive to the dimension of the vinegar variables ($v$).
- Mitigation: Snova’s team slightly increased the size of the vinegar variable space ($v$). This adjustment dramatically reduced the efficiency of the geometric attack, rendering Snova immune to WTAG.
- Snova's Tactical Security Margin Strategy:
- In Round 1 and Round 2, Snova's design team intentionally chose very aggressive parameters with tight security margins (e.g., only 2, 3, or 4 bits of margin).
- This was a calculated "fishing" (enticement) strategy: by leaving a narrow margin, they invited global cryptanalysts to actively attack Snova. Since these attacks failed to break the core structure of Snova (only succeeding on poorly tuned toy parameters), the underlying design was proven robust.
- For Round 3, Snova has introduced highly conservative, recommended parameters with large security margins, establishing a solid foundation of trust for NIST and security practitioners.

- 2. WTAG / WTAT
- Snova
The talk's account above is the designer's, given on stage in August 2026. The published record is more contested and still moving: the wedge-product attack of ePrint 2026/237 reports breaking 6 of 11 SNOVA parameter sets, and Beullens' weak-key forgery (ePrint 2024/1297, with public code) affects roughly 1 key in 140,000. Read the claims of immunity as applying to specific attack variants and specific parameter choices, not to SNOVA as a whole. The full cryptanalysis thread is collected under Papers & Publications below.
3.7 NIST Additional Signature Competition Status & Timeline / NIST
English
- September 2022: NIST announced the Additional Digital Signature Competition following the break of the Rainbow signature scheme.
- June 2023: Submission deadline. Out of approximately 50 team submissions, qualification reviews eliminated around 10 schemes, leaving 40 candidates.
- Round 1 (October 2024): After a year and a half of intensive security analysis and candidate eliminations, the 40 candidate schemes were reduced to 14.
- Round 2 (May 2026): NIST officially concluded Round 2, cutting the pool from 14 schemes down to 9.
- Recent Status (Post-May 2026): Shortly after the Round 2 announcement, a prominent Lattice-based digital signature scheme was broken. The designing team chose to voluntarily withdraw from the competition, reducing the remaining active candidate pool to 8 schemes.
- Future Outlook: There are approximately 2 years of review period remaining in this round of the NIST competition. Given that NIST has retained 4 multivariate schemes in the remaining pool, it is highly likely that a multivariate scheme will be standardized alongside Lattice-based signatures to maintain mathematical diversity. Snova stands as a frontrunner due to its superior specification profile.

3.8 Real-World Cryptographic Implementation Constraints /
English
- Where Digital Signatures Touch Real Systems: Professor Wang emphasizes that digital signatures are embedded in almost every critical node of our digital infrastructure:
- TLS/HTTPS Certificates: Secures web browsing; a single webpage load requires up to 6 signature verification cycles.
- Software Updates: Verifies that operating system patches (e.g., Windows Update) or application installers originate from legitimate vendors.
- Firmware Updates: Essential for IoT and embedded devices to prevent malicious firmware flashing.
- Code Signing: Used by software developers to sign executable binaries, ensuring intellectual property protection and preventing malware injection.
- Electronic Documents: Long-term authenticity and legally binding digital signatures.
- Cryptocurrency & Blockchain: Protects private keys and digital wallets (the foundation of transaction validation).
- The Migration Constraint: Migrating to PQC is primarily an engineering challenge rather than a purely theoretical one. It requires maintaining inventories of legacy algorithms, designing hybrid certificates (combining classical algorithms like ECC with post-quantum algorithms to prevent single-point failures), updating libraries, and managing hardware performance on resource-constrained embedded devices.

4. Conclusion / 結論
English
In conclusion, the post-quantum transition is an urgent necessity, codified by governmental mandates (such as the executive order signed in the US targeting PQC implementation by 2030). While Lattice-based cryptography remains the frontrunner, the high risk of mathematical monoculture makes Multivariate Cryptography the logical secondary defense. UOV offers a mature, 30-year-tested foundation, but suffers from oversized public keys. Snova elegantly solves this engineering constraint by transforming the scalar variables of UOV into matrix algebraic structures, yielding a highly compressed key-and-signature package under 1KB. Snova's exceptional speed, small footprints, and demonstrated resilience against cutting-edge MinRank and WTAG attacks make it one of the most promising post-quantum digital signature standards on the horizon.

5. Possible Implementation Directions or Extension Ways /
English
- Painless Software Upgrades in Network Protocols: Snova's sub-1KB public key and signature size enables its direct integration into existing TLS (Transport Layer Security) and SSH (Secure Shell) protocol implementations. Developers can construct hybrid TLS certificates (e.g., Snova + ECDSA) to ensure secure identity verification during the transition phase, without causing packet fragmentation issues commonly seen in other non-lattice candidates.
- Hardware Acceleration for Matrix Operations: Snova relies heavily on matrix multiplication and matrix equation solving over finite fields. Implementing Snova on FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) or specialized cryptographic accelerators (custom ASICs) leveraging parallel matrix units can drastically accelerate signature generation and verification, ideal for high-throughput cloud servers or secure elements in hardware security modules (HSMs).
- Rust-Based Secure Implementations: Rewriting the reference Snova implementation in Rust can eliminate memory safety vulnerabilities (such as buffer overflows) often associated with traditional C/C++ implementations, making it highly suitable for integration into modern, safety-critical systems like operating system kernels, cloud-native proxy servers (e.g., Envoy, Cloudflare's BoringSSL-based tools), and blockchain nodes.
- Integration with Blockchain Wallets: Given Shor's algorithm threat to ECC-protected cryptocurrency wallets, Snova can be extended as a post-quantum signature option for next-generation blockchain protocols. Its low signature size ensures that transaction fees (gas fees) and blockchain ledger growth rate remain within manageable parameters, while securing transaction integrity.

Precise English Translation (精確英文翻譯)
This PQC, of course, refers to the collective name for modern cryptography that can resist quantum computing, meaning quantum attacks. Of course, within PQC, there are several branches. The one that people hear about most frequently is Lattice-based cryptography. Because Lattice-based schemes had relatively secure versions early on, they performed well throughout the competition. Actually, the development of PQC can be traced back to around 2015. In 2015, around this time in August, the website of the US National Security Agency (NSA) suddenly took down all pages that originally encouraged everyone to use Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and Suite B. They took down all those pages and posted just a single page stating: From now on, all vendors collaborating with or providing hardware or software to the US government must consider quantum computer attacks when they provide services or equipment. So this web page can be said to be the true beginning of our PQC era.
Once this web page was published, it naturally changed the entire cryptographic ecosystem. The previously thriving ECC collapsed overnight, and the tectonic plates of cryptography experienced a dramatic rise and fall. This was because the mathematics used in traditional cryptography was primarily number theory. But starting from this web page, number theorists withdrew significantly from this cryptographic domain, replaced by mathematical methods and ideas from other new mathematical fields coming in. So this was a massive paradigm shift.
Then in 2016, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced at the PQC conference in Fukuoka, Japan: From now on, I will solicit new cryptographic algorithms from the entire world that can resist quantum algorithms. So the global competition for quantum-resistant algorithms began there. Actually, the first phase of this competition has already finalized, and the algorithms we hear about now, such as Kyber for key exchange, or Dilithium for digital signatures (which are Lattice-based signatures), were selected in that round.
Precise English Translation (精確英文翻譯)
Among these PQC cryptographic branches, besides Lattice-based, Multivariate cryptography can be considered the second most favored branch. Why is that? Because among all these categorized branches, apart from Lattice-based and Multivariate-based, there are also Code-based, Hash-based, and the Isogeny-based algorithms where number theorists continue to struggle. However, even with so many categories, you always have to balance implementation and specification constraints. For example, some signatures are extremely long, which prevents them from being used in real-time communication protocols. Similarly, Code-based or some Hash-based systems suffer from performance bottlenecks.
Therefore, looking at the mathematical tools that can balance both security and performance, Lattice is the first choice, and the second is probably Multivariate mathematics. Consequently, in the digital signatures NIST chose in the previous round, they selected two Lattice-based schemes and one Multivariate-based scheme (Rainbow). Unfortunately, the selected Multivariate-based Rainbow system was broken shortly thereafter. This left NIST with only Lattice-based systems. This was a highly undesirable outcome for NIST. Because NIST declared in their 2018 annual meeting that they wanted "not to put all eggs in one basket," meaning they hoped the mathematical foundations of standardized algorithms would not rely on a single mathematical problem. Therefore, the collapse of Rainbow forced NIST to launch a new round of digital signature competition, which is the "Additional Digital Signature Competition" we are discussing today.
Snova entered this new round of competition. In this current competition, from its preparation around 2023 to now in 2026, it has been nearly four years. Throughout this competition, starting with nearly 50 teams, the qualification review in the first month eliminated about 10 teams, leaving 40 active participants. Among these 40 teams, about 10 systems were knocked out in the very first month. Over the subsequent year and a half, more systems gradually encountered issues. Thus, after Round 1 concluded, NIST slashed two-thirds of the candidates from 40 down to 14. These 14 teams competed for another year and a half, and in May of this year, Round 2 concluded. The 14 teams were cut down to 9, with several more eliminated. We originally thought more teams would be cut, but NIST was relatively merciful this time, only eliminating five teams and keeping nine. That was in May, but recently, one of the remaining nine Lattice-based systems was broken, and the design team chose to voluntarily withdraw. Therefore, the active candidate pool now stands at 8 teams. This is the current status of the competition.
Section 6.3: Presenter Background & Topic Intro /
Precise English Translation (精確英文翻譯)
We will discuss more about the current status of multivariate systems toward the end of the presentation. Currently, I am a professor in the Applied Mathematics Department at National Dong Hwa University. As a math teacher, I am well aware that lecturing on pure mathematics in a professional setting is not much different from playing a lullaby. Therefore, today's presentation will contain almost no rigorous mathematics. However, assuming you have some high school mathematics background, we can pause at certain points and let our imaginations guide us in understanding how everything works.
In addition, I am currently on secondment to the Foxconn Research Institute as a Special Researcher. Although I have been seconded there, my primary work remains the same: participating in this NIST competition, actively fine-tuning and defending the Snova signature system. This work has been going on for four years, and to be honest, I am quite exhausted. I originally thought that if we got eliminated, I wouldn't have to be tired anymore. But we were not eliminated, so I have no choice but to carry on.
Today, I would like to introduce multivariate cryptography to everyone, focusing specifically on the digital signature aspect. Broadly speaking, when we design cryptographic systems, we focus on three main areas: first, Key Exchange; second, Encryption; and third, Digital Signatures. However, strictly speaking, digital signatures have the most widespread applications of all three. In the online world, during communication with someone or a website, you cannot physically see the other party, right? Therefore, verifying who the other party actually is serves as the starting point of any conversation. Without identity verification, you have no way of knowing who you are talking to. If the other party is a spoofed website or an imposter, without the protection of digital signatures, you cannot even establish the identity of your interlocutor in the first step. In our digital communications era, identity verification is the foundation of everything. Before discussing whether we can encrypt our conversation, if you don't even know who you are talking to, there can be no secure subsequent steps. Thus, although cryptography has three dimensions, digital signatures represent the most critical first step.
Section 6.4: The Evolution from RSA to ECC and Quantum Threat / 第四節:從 RSA 到 ECC 的演進與量子威脅
Precise Chinese Transcript (精確中文逐字稿)
那像現在正在中央研究院訪問的 TIA(Tatsuaki Okamoto / 或者是其他 ECC 專家),他就是 ECC 的專家,像他們在 ECC 的實作上都很寫貢獻。
Precise English Translation (精確英文翻譯)
Our talk today is divided into several sections. I will begin with a rapid overview of the status of the PQC migration, and then introduce the core concepts of Multivariate Cryptography. Next, I will present Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar (UOV) as a foundational example. Snova is an extension of UOV, so once you grasp the underlying principles of UOV, you can easily visualize how Snova operates. Finally, I will wrap up by explaining the current status of the NIST digital signature competition.
Today, the standard public-key cryptosystems we use are RSA and ECC. While they were developed early on, RSA was heavily patented, preventing large companies from adopting it widely due to high licensing costs. RSA truly became dominant only after its patent expired, which perfectly coincided with the rise of the commercial internet.
As RSA matured, the concept of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) emerged. The primary motivation for ECC came from the discrete logarithm problem used in key exchange. If you study classical cryptography, you are likely familiar with the Diffie-Hellman key exchange protocol. Extending this concept to signatures leads naturally to ECC, making its development a logical progression. ECC has a long history, boosted significantly by aggressive backing from the US government. Since the US is a democratic nation where congressional lobbying is common, several mathematicians founded a company (Certicom) and successfully lobbied the government to endorse ECC, which explains why the US government actively promoted it.
However, the dramatic policy shift in 2015 marked the beginning of the PQC era. Prominent visiting scholars at Academia Sinica, such as TIA (referring to Tatsuaki Okamoto or other cryptography experts), have made monumental contributions to the practical implementation of ECC. Despite its achievements, ECC must now be phased out as PQC arrives. With executive directives mandating complete PQC migration by 2030, time is running out.
Furthermore, quantum computing is advancing much faster than early predictions. Whether this progress will accelerate even further with the integration of AI remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the arrival of a viable quantum computer is practically on the horizon. In the 1990s, Peter Shor proposed Shor's Algorithm, which can solve both discrete logarithm and prime factorization problems in polynomial time on a quantum computer. Remarkably, Shor's algorithm is mathematically more efficient at solving discrete logarithms than prime factorizations. Consequently, ECC is actually more vulnerable to quantum attacks than RSA. If a quantum computer is realized, ECC-based schemes will be the first to fall. Since nearly all digital cryptocurrencies rely on ECC to secure their wallets, they face immediate vulnerability. While hacking a bank is illegal, attacking an unregulated digital wallet is much harder to prosecute. Thus, an attacker with a quantum computer would immediately target Bitcoin, potentially gaining astronomical wealth before general-purpose quantum computers even enter the public market. This creates an urgent, immediate demand for PQC.
Section 6.5: Cryptographic Hard Problems and the MQ Equation /

The mathematical domains available for PQC include Lattices, Code-based (error-correcting codes), Hash-based, and Multivariate Quadratic (MQ) systems, among other branches. The foundational principle of modern public-key cryptography is to identify a computationally hard mathematical problem and use its asymmetry to design a cryptosystem. RSA and ECC are built on prime factorization and discrete logarithms, which collapse from NP to P complexity under Shor's quantum algorithm. Thus, we must search for alternative NP-hard problems. The Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) in lattices and the Multivariate Quadratic (MQ) problem in multivariate cryptography are both NP-hard, serving as ideal secure foundations for post-quantum cryptosystems.
Now, let's explore how we design a digital signature system using multivariate cryptography. First, let us clarify the basic concept of a digital signature for a general audience. The terminology surrounding "signatures" can be confusing, with terms like "electronic signatures," "digital signatures," and "digital certificates" often used interchangeably.
Conceptually, digital signatures differ from handwritten signatures. A handwritten signature can serve multiple purposes: a celebrity signs an autograph for sentimental value, while a business executive signs a contract to grant legal authorization. However, the most fundamental security requirement of any signature is to establish non-repudiation. Once you sign a document, you cannot later claim that the signature is not yours. For example, if you write a check and sign your name, you cannot legally refuse payment by claiming someone else signed it. Our digital signature systems are mathematically designed to guarantee this non-repudiation.

The ultimate goal of a digital signature is to enforce non-repudiation. Other secondary properties of physical signatures are irrelevant here; non-repudiation is the core focus of digital signature designs.
How do we mathematically enforce non-repudiation? Suppose you have a message $M$ that you want to sign. In a public-key cryptosystem, you generate a key pair consisting of a private key and a public key. The private key ($Sk$) is used to generate the digital signature, denoted as $\sigma$ (Sigma). The verification process works by passing $\sigma$ through a verification function using the corresponding public key ($Pk$). If the mathematical output of this function matches the original message $M$ ($Pk(\sigma) = M$), it proves that $\sigma$ is indeed the valid digital signature for message $M$. Because generating a valid $\sigma$ mathematically requires possession of the private key, and only the owner holds that private key, the signer cannot deny signing the message. This guarantee of non-repudiation is extremely valuable for commercial transactions. When two corporations sign a contract digitally, neither party can later deny its validity. Non-repudiation is the most vital property in digital signature design.
As mentioned earlier, PQC is a portfolio of different algorithms, not a single monolithic replacement. For Lattice-based systems, we have ML-DSA (derived from Dilithium) and FN-DSA (derived from Falcon). For Hash-based cryptography, we have SLH-DSA (derived from SPHINCS+). In Code-based cryptography, we have systems like HQC. In the Multivariate domain, we currently have four candidate systems competing in the NIST Additional Signature Competition.
Among these four multivariate candidates, the oldest and most mature is the Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar (UOV) scheme, which was proposed in 1999 and has withstood nearly 30 years of cryptanalytic scrutiny. Because of its long history, researchers have high confidence in UOV's safety. However, the other three candidates—MAYO, QR-UOV, and Snova—are all modified variants of UOV. Why do we modify UOV? Because classical UOV has an exceptionally large public key size that limits its practical utility. Even at the lowest security level (Level 1), UOV’s public key is about 40KB, which is too large for standard network packets.
Therefore, the other three candidates focus on compressing the public key size. MAYO and QR-UOV use different mathematical optimization techniques to achieve this. Snova, on the other hand, combines the best compression strategies of its predecessors into a highly integrated matrix-based architecture. As a result, Snova possesses the most complex internal algebraic structure, but it also achieves the smallest key footprint. The combined size of Snova’s public key and signature is less than 1KB (under 1K), which is comparable to legacy RSA key sizes. This allows software systems to perform a "painless" drop-in upgrade by replacing old signatures directly with Snova without modifying high-level protocols. Very few post-quantum signature schemes can support such seamless integration.

Let us formally define the mathematical problem underlying multivariate cryptography. Suppose we have $m$ quadratic multivariate polynomials, $f_1, \dots, f_m$. "Multivariate" means they contain multiple variables, and "quadratic" means every term is of degree two, such as $x_1 x_2$ or $x_1^2$. With $m$ polynomials and $n$ variables, this system forms a multivariate polynomial map from an $n$-dimensional vector space to an $m$-dimensional vector space: $F: \mathbb{F}_q^n \to \mathbb{F}_q^m$. Evaluating this map in the forward direction—meaning, plugging in an input vector $\mathbf{x}$ to compute the output vector $\mathbf{y}$—is computationally trivial, requiring only basic arithmetic. However, the inverse mapping problem—given an arbitrary output vector $\mathbf{y}$, finding an input vector $\mathbf{x}$ such that $F(\mathbf{x}) = \mathbf{y}$—is extremely difficult, requiring us to solve a system of simultaneous non-linear multivariate quadratic equations.
In mathematics, the complexity of solving polynomial systems depends on two parameters: the number of variables (dimension) and the polynomial degree. In middle school, we learn to solve single-variable linear equations, followed by single-variable quadratic equations. When I was a student, high schools still taught how to solve single-variable cubic equations, but today's curriculum usually stops at quadratic equations for a single variable.
The alternative path is increasing the number of variables while keeping the degree linear, such as solving systems of two-variable linear equations (simultaneous linear equations). When either parameter is equal to one—either single-variable equations of high degree, or multi-variable equations of degree one (linear systems)—we have highly efficient, polynomial-time algorithms (such as numerical root-finding or Gaussian elimination). However, when both parameters are greater than one—meaning multi-variable quadratic equations—the problem becomes NP-hard. This Multivariate Quadratic (MQ) problem serves as the core cryptographic barrier protecting multivariate cryptosystems.

Precise English Translation (精確英文翻譯)
Let us explore the core design principles of multivariate cryptosystems. In public-key cryptography, we generate a public key and a private key. In multivariate cryptography, the public key $P$ is constructed as a composition of three mathematical maps: $P = T \circ F \circ S$.
- The composed map $P$ represents the public key.
- The individual maps $T$, $F$, and $S$ collectively form the private key. The security barrier is analogous to prime factorization in RSA: if an attacker cannot decompose the public mapping $P$ back into its constituent components $T$, $F$, and $S$, they cannot obtain the private key.
The middle map, $F$, is referred to as the central map (or core map). $T$ and $S$ are invertible linear mappings designed to entangle and mix the variables. The central map $F$ contains a specific algebraic "trapdoor" that allows the private key holder to easily solve the inverse equation. This unique trapdoor feature must be completely hidden by composing $F$ with $S$ and $T$. To an outsider, the public key $P$ looks like a completely general, random system of quadratic equations.
The Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar (UOV) scheme simplifies this design by omitting $S$ entirely, requiring only $T$ and $F$ (so $P = F \circ T$).
Let us examine the UOV trapdoor structure, which is elegant and intuitive. To construct the central map $F$, we partition the $n$ variables into two disjoint sets:
- Vinegar Variables ($v$ variables): ${x_1, \dots, x_v}$
- Oil Variables ($o$ variables): ${x_{v+1}, \dots, x_{v+o}}$ The total number of variables is $n = v + o$. The name "Oil and Vinegar" was chosen by the scheme’s inventors as an analogy to how oil and vinegar naturally separate into distinct layers in a container without mixing.
Section 6.9: Detailed Mechanics of the UOV Trapdoor / 第九節:UOV 陷門與方程式求解細節
Precise English Translation (精確英文翻譯)
Under this variable partition, the quadratic polynomials in the central map $F$ must adhere to a strict structural rule. For every quadratic term in each polynomial $f_k$:
- You are allowed to have $(\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Vinegar})$ terms.
- You are allowed to have $(\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Oil})$ terms.
- You are strictly forbidden from having $(\text{Oil} \times \text{Oil})$ terms. In other words, the variables are combined such that quadratic interactions only occur between vinegar variables themselves, or between vinegar and oil variables. No oil variable can be multiplied by another oil variable.
To construct the central map $F$, we generate $m$ such quadratic polynomials, choosing the coefficients randomly, subject to this term restriction.
What is the mathematical consequence of forbidding $(\text{Oil} \times \text{Oil})$ terms? Suppose we assign completely random values to all $v$ vinegar variables. Because the vinegar variables are now fixed constants, any $(\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Vinegar})$ term collapses into a constant, and any $(\text{Vinegar} \times \text{Oil})$ term collapses into a linear term in the oil variables. Since there are no $(\text{Oil} \times \text{Oil})$ terms to produce quadratic oil terms, the entire system of quadratic equations in $F$ instantly collapses into a system of linear equations in the oil variables.
Solving a system of $o$ linear equations in $o$ variables is computationally simple using Gaussian elimination. Once we solve for the oil variables, we combine them with our chosen vinegar variables to form the complete central signature vector. Finally, we apply $T^{-1}$ (the inverse of the linear map $T$, which is easy to compute) to obtain the final signature $\sigma$. Anyone with the private key (possessing the trapdoor knowledge of the vinegar-oil partition and the linear maps) can sign messages rapidly. However, a malicious attacker who only has the public key $P$ sees what appears to be a general, completely randomized system of quadratic equations, which remains NP-hard to solve. This is the operational mechanism of UOV.

The advantages of UOV are clear: it is structurally simple (its core principles can be explained in minutes), easy to implement, exceptionally fast at signature verification (requiring only basic polynomial evaluation), and generates very short signatures. Furthermore, its underlying mathematical structure has been analyzed for nearly three decades, making it a highly mature and trusted post-quantum scheme.
However, UOV’s primary bottleneck is its enormous public key size. To store the public key, one must store the coefficients of all the multivariate polynomials. Because a multivariate quadratic system contains a vast number of terms, the number of coefficients is extremely large, leading to oversized public keys. This limitation inspired the development of various compressed UOV variants.
Snova is designed specifically to resolve this public key size bottleneck. Our core innovation is to replace the traditional scalar variables and coefficients of UOV with matrix variables and matrix coefficients. By embedding the algebraic equations within a matrix framework, we drastically reduce the number of independent coefficients that must be stored in the public key. While this introduces a highly structured matrix framework, it successfully compresses Snova’s combined public key and signature size to less than 1KB, placing it in the same class as classical RSA.
Of course, introducing a structured matrix algebra framework also invites new algebraic and geometric attack vectors specifically tailored to exploit matrix relations. Consequently, my primary role over the past four years has been defending Snova against an array of sophisticated global cryptanalyses. Because Snova incorporates the most advanced algebraic structures, any attack designed for other candidates—whether targeting MAYO, QR-UOV, or classical UOV—is inevitably tested against Snova. We have had to defend against the widest variety of cryptanalytic vectors.
This constant threat model means our research team has had to work indefatigably. Since NIST announced Snova’s selection for Round 3 in May of this year, we have been preparing our updated Round 3 specifications, which are due at the end of this month. My doctoral students have been working seven days a week for three consecutive months, and I have been working right alongside them. We share the same grueling mission.

Following four years of intensive evaluations, we have realized a key sociological reality of cryptography: mathematical proofs of security are rarely enough to satisfy the community. There is a socio-psychological dimension where a cryptosystem is only deemed truly secure if it remains unbroken over a long period. Even if a newly proposed system stands resiliently against a barrage of state-of-the-art cryptanalysis, practitioners remain hesitant, believing it requires a longer review window. Our current task is to build this long-term trust with NIST.
NIST appears highly receptive to multivariate cryptosystems, but they naturally seek an extended observation period before fully standardizing them. Snova’s advantages are undeniable: when compared to other candidates—including standardized Lattice-based signatures—Snova outperforms them across nearly every major technical metric. If Snova's security is fully verified, it offers the best overall specifications of any post-quantum signature candidate. Snova’s public key and signature sizes are exceptionally compact, and its computational speed is unmatched. In terms of implementation metrics, Snova ranks first on NIST's evaluation charts. The only caution raised is that its advanced algebraic structures require longer scrutiny; however, our success in defending against all known attacks is highly encouraging.
Over the past few months, several academic papers claimed to make significant cryptanalytic breakthroughs against Snova. Naturally, these claims initially caused us concern. Because Snova is analyzed by multiple global teams, we had to review every single paper carefully—essentially defending one against many. Fortunately, we leveraged modern AI tools to accelerate our paper-reading workflow and automate the generation of implementation test scripts. After executing rigorous test runs, we confirmed that these newly proposed attacks do not achieve any practical degradation of Snova's security. This has further bolstered our confidence in Snova's robustness.
Our security resilience is also a product of our tactical parameter selection. In Round 1 and Round 2 of the competition, we deliberately chose highly aggressive parameters with narrow security margins (e.g., only 2, 3, or 4 bits of margin). This was an intentional "fishing" strategy: by presenting a tight margin, we enticed top global cryptanalysts from Japan, China, Europe, and the US to focus their efforts on Snova. While some poorly chosen toy parameters were broken, the core algebraic design of Snova remained completely secure. Now, for Round 3, we have selected and recommended highly conservative parameters with substantial security margins. Having withstood years of concentrated global analysis from the world's leading multivariate cryptographers without any core vulnerability being discovered, we believe Snova has proven its long-term reliability.
Section 6.12: Q&A on Snova, MinRank, and WTAG / 第十二節:現場問答:Snova、MinRank 與 WTAG 攻擊細節

Moderator: Let us applaud to thank Professor Wang. I noticed some highly technical questions on Slido. A participant asked: Snova has previously been subjected to both MinRank (MR) and WTAG attacks. Do you still believe Snova can reliably resist these attack vectors after these cryptanalyses?
Professor Wang Li-chung: I would like to address this. As a primary designer of Snova, any defense I offer might sound biased, but I will share our technical reasoning and the mitigation strategies we documented during our Round 3 specification updates.
First, regarding the MinRank (MR) attack: this was proposed during Round 1. The researcher who designed this attack is incredibly capable, but he is also known for his highly sarcastic and critical tone in the academic community. When analyzing our system, he pointed out a specific vulnerability in Snova's initial coefficient generation: we selected coefficients with too much algebraic consistency (homogeneity). Due to this mathematical consistency, the rank of Snova's public key matrices collapsed much faster than expected under an algebraic solver. We resolved this issue in our Round 2 update by changing Snova’s coefficient selection process to avoid consistent or homogeneous coefficients. Without coefficient consistency, the rate of rank-reduction drops to near zero, rendering the MinRank attack completely ineffective. Therefore, the MinRank attack is no longer a viable threat against Snova.
Between Round 2 and Round 3, a highly celebrated geometric attack known as WTAG (or WTAT) was proposed by a Dutch doctoral researcher, L. This work was highly praised and won cryptographic awards because it introduced a novel differential geometric framework to analyze hidden structures in UOV-family systems. The author claimed his geometric attack could compromise UOV, MAYO, QR-UOV, and Snova. However, when his preprint was published online, other researchers immediately identified a significant mathematical error in his calculation regarding the size of certain algebraic groups. Consequently, the author retracted his specific attack against Snova.
Is Snova theoretically vulnerable to a corrected version of this geometric attack? Yes, the underlying geometric structures can be targeted. Among the candidate systems, QR-UOV initially appeared immune because it is defined over a field of odd characteristic (prime field), where the initial WTAG geometric mappings are ineffective. However, subsequent variants of the geometric attack bypassed this field limitation, meaning QR-UOV's immunity was temporary.
Snova's team, working in coordination with NIST researchers, analyzed these advanced WTAG geometric variants. We discovered that while the geometric attack can target Snova, its computational efficiency is extremely sensitive to the dimension of the vinegar variables ($v$). By slightly increasing the number of vinegar variables ($v$) in Snova’s parameter configurations, the geometric structure of the attack is disrupted, and its complexity scales exponentially, rendering it completely impractical. Currently, Snova is fully immune to all known WTAG and geometric variants. Crucially, these mitigations only require adjusting Snova's parameter configurations, without altering its core mathematical design. This demonstrates that Snova does not suffer from any fundamental algebraic or structural vulnerabilities.
